Blinds are one of the most popular window treatments available on the market. Usually when it comes to blinds, most people think of traditional horizontal blinds, in which each slat runs from left to right rather than up and down. Vertical blinds, however are a popular and attractive alternative that are being considered more these days. They're a great idea for covering windows and even sliding doors. They're multifunctional and add to the aesthetic of your home décor.
But before you make a decision, use our guide to learn more about the pros and cons of vertical blinds, cleaning and maintenance tips, and the great selection of Hunter Douglas styles we carry. Let's begin:
Pros of Vertical Blinds
Light and Privacy
Vertical blind slats are thicker than horizontal blinds. This blocks sunlight more effectively providing UV protection and can also keep heat from escaping during the cold seasons. Not only do vertical blind slats help with sunlight, but they also give you the ultimate privacy when completely closed. So, if your windows look directly out into the streets or if your room is overlooked by another property, you can be confident that your vertical blinds will keep those prying eyes out while still allowing lots of light in through your windows.
Easy to Use
When used to cover a sliding patio door, vertical blinds can easily be partially opened to allow you to walk in and out with no awkwardness.
Added Height
The height of vertical blinds can make small windows look larger. Tall windows and sliding doors look more sophisticated since vertical blinds cover their entire height and width.
Easy to Replace
If vertical blinds are damaged for any reason, single blind panels can be easily replaced. If you ever need to replace or repair any damage that your blinds or other Hunter Douglas window treatments go through, contact one of our 14 locations to get help, or contact Hunter Douglas!
Countless Colors and Materials
Vertical blinds are available in a wide variety of colors and materials which makes them versatile window treatments that have a place in any home décor style.
Considerations of Vertical Blinds
Noise
When the blinds are opened, the vertical columns can swing and collide together causing a disturbing noise. This same thing can happen from a fan being on or a window being open, which can be a bit troubling if used in a bedroom.
Floor Contact
Vertical blinds made out of fabric can pick up dust and dirt from the floor. This can be annoying to clean and keep up with.
Cleaning and Maintenance of Vertical Blinds
Despite the last disadvantage, vertical blinds are quite easy to clean and maintain.
How often should you clean vertical blinds?
Let their appearance be your guide; if they look dirty to you or if it's been a year, it's time to clean them.
Do you need to remove vertical blinds to clean them?
No; while some people prefer to, this is rarely necessary for vertical blinds. Removing blinds takes additional time, space and care, adds risk of damage and may not produce cleaner results.
What kind of cleaning is best for vertical blinds?
-Vacuum with an upholstery wand attachment (do this first)
-Dust (always dust before washing)
-If you still need additional cleaning after dusting, wash or spot clean the blinds.
What's the best way to vacuum vertical blinds?
You'll need:
-Regular household vacuum
-Brush attachment or blind-cleaning attachment
-Vacuum slowly, give yourself plenty of time to avoid rushing
Steps:
-Close blinds fully (side to side) to avoid having slats bunched on one end
-Turn blinds fully to one side
-Slowly vacuum the slats, individually from top to bottom. Move side to side if needed (for wider slats or narrow vacuum) and take your time.
-Turn blinds fully to the other side and repeat
